Acne Cleansers for your PreTeen: Salicylic Acid

Salicylic Acid in many over the counter cleansers for acne come in a 2% concentration. These cleansers are a great starting point for :

  • Early Acne

  • Mild Acne

  • Maintenance Regimens

Salicylic acid works by chemically exfoliating the skin to reduce oil and sebum build up that can clog our pores and lead to comedones.

For Early Acne, many Pre Teens are not necessarily used to a routine that includes washing their face. Most do take showers or baths with some level of frequency. I tend to advise my patients to consider starting their cleansing routine in the shower for acne. Place your cleanser in your shower and wash you face and, if needed chest and back, while in the shower with your acne cleanser as you may be more likely to use it. Cleansers for acne do not tend to be as harsh simply because they are not on your skin as long as leave-on topicals.

Our top picks for Acne Cleansers with Salicylic Acid include:

Neutrogena Oil-Free Salicylic Acid Acne Fighting Face Wash

This cleanser is one of my top picks for a new acne fighting routine. It has salicylic acid in a 2% concentration and a fresh scent. This can be purchased at Target or Amazon or your local store.

La Roche Posay Effaclar Medicated Gel Face Cleanser for Acne Prone Skin

La Roche Posay makes wonderful products that have a great feel to them. The gel base to this cleanser can leave your skin feeling a little more hydrated in spite of the salicylic acid base. In my experience with this cleanser my skin just felt more 'polished' after using it.

It can be found at your local store, Target or Amazon.

Clean & Clear Acne Triple Clear Facial Cleanser Salicylic Acid

I find that the mint scent that comes with this cleanser can give the impression of a 'clean' feel after use. For this reason, this product can be a favorite for many pre teens who simply like the mint effect along with the fact that it still contains salicylic acid In a 2% concentration to fight acne. It can be purchased at your local store, Target, or Amazon
